ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines a distinction between envy and jealousy. The important difference between envy and jealousy is that envy leads to destruction, to emptiness, whereas jealousy is not destructive and can lead to development if it can be acknowledged for what it is. The chapter provides many examples of envious rage and its consequences that can be found in fairy tales. It then looks at the process of moving from envy to guilt and reparation. Everyone has to deal with their own feelings that are generated by a perception of being in some way lacking in relation to another person, and indeed with the feeling that someone else is envious or jealous of oneself. It is an underlying feature of many daily interactions at all sorts of levels of relationship. It can even be a feature of people's relationship with themselves.
