ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to elucidate and demonstrate the meaning and utility of the concept of transference as it is applied to understanding some psychological issues in small training groups. The research has attempted to ascertain whether transference manifestations are more likely to appear in psychoanalytically oriented than in human relations groups. After the investigation, notable differences in members' ratings of leaders for the two groups were observed. Study group consultants received more diverse ratings than T-group trainers. National Training Laboratories (NTL)develops a culture that is peer oriented, stresses expression of feelings, involves trainers and members working together on group issues both in and out of the training events, and has a more optimistic flavour than the Tavistock psychoanalytically oriented approach. An underlying assumption in both orientations is that individual learning is most effective when it is experiential, involving both feeling and thought.
