ABSTRACT

Donald Meltzer shows interest in a book that would give an account of the experience of working together as a group in psychoanalytic training. Internal problems arose as a result of the contacts with those outside the group, such as meetings in the presence of invited guests or during the last phase of the preparation of Clinical Psychoanalysis of Children and Adults. Meltzer's response was to offer a five-year psychoanalytic training plan, centred on work with clinical material, at a rhythm of three weekends a year. The only thing he wanted to know was whether the participants had been through a personal analysis and whether they belonged to any institution. Respect for individual differences has been one of the most arduous tasks, as has been the protection of personal freedom and interests, while at the same time a certain unity that has allowed growing as a group has been preserved.
