ABSTRACT

A moment of communication is a moment of reciprocal exchange. The capacity for symbol formation in the individual is an important part of normal development and is a crucial matter in the capacity to communicate and to become socialized. We know that when we are in communication with other people, not only does it take place on different levels, but different ways will be used to convey meaning. Usually the people with whom we communicate are those whom we have come to trust and with whom we have something in common. In the work with children we find that we spend a good deal of time creating the conditions which make communication possible. All children who come our way have been through painful experiences of one kind, and this has led many of them to clamp down on feelings and others of them to feel angry and hostile, because this is more tolerable than to feel loss and isolation.
