ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the realization of the idiomatic expression "asked for her hand" in both fairy tales and dreams, as well as in a broader social context, in which a marriage proposal is associated with the act of taking a maiden's hand. It presents the fairy tale itself, with some considerations regarding typology and interpretation. The chapter explains the fairy tales to be a valuable source of knowledge regarding the ways in which marriage has been perceived in society, as well as the imbalance of powers between the sexes. It also discusses the realization of this idiomatic expression in various versions of the tale "The Maiden without Hands" in order to touch upon the possible social meanings of this widespread narrative, which includes such an aggressive, cruel, and gruesome act in its plot. The Druze is a monotheistic religious community, which emerged during the eleventh century from Islamism.
