ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with one of the most popular and widespread fairy tales, Cinderella. Understanding a girl behavior as a realization of the idiomatic expression "to step into someone's shoes" allows people to interpret her act as a manifestation of empathy: Entering her group mate's shoe puts her in his position. The Cinderella tale is one of the most popular fairy tales in both Western and non-Western cultures. However, in the current context, it is worth noting that in most versions of the sub-types, the shoe motif still appears, even in cultures in which shoes are considered as a symbol for dirtiness and insult, such as Muslim societies. The Jewish version originates from an Islamic country, Yemen, in which the shoe is an inferior object as well. The question of power differences between men and women is an important aspect of the foundation matrix. Class structure, gender roles, and the power structure of society are part of its foundation matrix.
