ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the use of problem-based learning as part of a Masters programme in Public Health for mixed groups of working professionals around the world. The programme is delivered both face-to-face and in an online environment for learners overseas, and as part of both programmes, the learners must engage with a case study involving ethics and legality. The chapter also addresses the issue of emotions and anxiety caused by some of the topics covered by problem-based learning, and how a teacher must be prepared to console or support the learners who become upset. It examines briefly some of the ethical issues involved in teaching ethical issues in Public Health—questions of privacy, anonymity, codes of conduct, processes, rules, and principles. The Public Health programme, therefore, is an example of problem-based learning that is attached to a consideration of ethical issues.
