ABSTRACT

Words that suggest the sound of emptiness or hollowness, such as reverberate or echo, or the absence of sound, e.g. silence or stillness, are also part of the void vocabulary. The differentiation of the void is of great importance in learning to live alongside it. For most people then the void is to do with emptiness, aloneness, and a sense of falling, and their experience of it is distressing. When dealing with a void experience one may not be sure whether one is dealing with an experience of the pleroma or whether one is dealing with a differentiation of the pleroma, that is the void as effective emptiness. The abyss or abysm suggests a deep hole, something threatening. It has connotations of the underworld, darkness, and bottomlessness. It seems more sinister, less neutral than the void. Whereas the void extends in all directions the abyss' extremity is its depth.
