ABSTRACT

In a whole series of cases the people can observe that certain character traits regress easily to their erotic pre-stage-whose sublimation-product they really are-and in this way composite formations of erotic and character traits are brought about. If indeed any further proof were needed, then this series of observations might serve as an argument against Jung's mistaken hypothesis, according to which the erotic impulses uncovered in the analysis are not to be taken as 'real' but only as 'symbolic'. The constant admixture of erotic tendencies in the apparently already 'clarified' character traits shows the people as nothing else does how true to life those unconscious impulses still are, and how they take advantage of every opportunity to realize themselves in any-and, as the people have seen, often very transparent-garb.
