ABSTRACT

In O. Liebmann’s Gedanken und Tatsachen (2. Aufl., Strassburg, 1899) we find the following observation: ‘There are dramas which would be quite unintelligible except for what goes on behind the scenes. The human mind is such a drama. What is enacted on the stage in the full light of consciousness are only detached fragments and scraps of the personal mental life. That would be inconceivable and indeed impossible without taking into account what occurs in the wings, which are unconscious processes.’ (Quoted from M. Offner, Das Gedächtnis.)
