ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors gave a workshop on training in teaching skills at an annual family therapy conference. Within the constraints, they aim in workshops on the theme of gender to invite participants to expand their thinking about families and couples in two directions. One is outwards, into the wider social system, to think about the impact of patriarchal social systems on the lives of men and women. The other is inwards to thinking about how our constructions of self are affected by the way we have been brought up to think about ourselves as men and women. The greater the opportunity that can be created for women and men to explore the complexity of gender patterns in their personal and professional lives, the more this enhances their ability to think critically about such patterns and thus work more creatively.
