ABSTRACT

Gestalt therapy can help us to identify blockages and difficulties, to explore new ways of functioning, to tame our fears, doubts and suffering. The accent today is on preventive medicine: there is no need to await suffering before seeking help. Clients in Gestalt are often surprised to discover that it is possible to "work on" success, good contact and well-being, and not just problem areas or traumatic events. Gestalt advocates letting go, and trust. The aim of this is to accompany the client in the "need satisfaction cycle". This can be done with warmth and sharing, which always helps growth, and without exaggerating the role of frustration as the way to progression. Gestalt is often used in group therapy, where the group generally acts as a support for the dual interaction between the therapist and the client. Another application of Gestalt to group work is "Gestalt of the group," which is centered on actual interactions between group members.
