ABSTRACT

In a paper exploring the key themes of past major Group Relations conferences run by the Australian Institute of Socio-Analysis (ASIA), the author describes the development of 'the socio-analytic mind' in Australia. This chapter addresses three levels of applied learning: for participants, for staff and for sponsoring organizations in this case AISA. Much has been written about transference of conference learning and the application of learning for the individual. The chapter covers a spectrum: the individual, the group and the organization rather than examining the detailed nature of adult learning in the context of Group Relations. AISA had recently undertaken changes to its organizational structure that have been both very painful and fruitful. One of these changes was the establishment of various Directorates. In particular the role of 'Director of Group Relations' (and other programmes) is relevant here.
