ABSTRACT

The discussion of nomadic thinking and the nomadic team touched on the "House of Language" and looked at the nomadic and poetic use of language, which has its own logic: the logic of metaphor. Metaphors revolve around images, and an image that arises in an open dialogue can be regarded as the third element, the "third space". In the third space, narrative psychotherapy can create a system, a complex of relationships; it can generate new meanings, pursue new avenues, and help to make new stories. The film Lars and the Real Girl provides a fascinating example of a narrative space. A therapist who sets out to heal the client, or to guide the client towards health, is adopting the dyadic position, that of expert and "master signifier". But the third space can help the therapist to adopt a position alongside the client, to engage in a cooperative relationship around this third space.
