ABSTRACT

More and more people are experiencing problems at work. Some of this is the employers' fault, as more and more is demanded, overtly or covertly, from the employees. There is still a lot of stigma, prejudice, and fear about mental health issues, and these also exist at work, where people often experience a lot of stress and where they also spend a significant amount of their time. In a recent survey, about 70-75% of employees believe that if they admit that they suffer from mental health problems such as stress, depression, and anxiety, they would damage their future career prospects. This is especially true of older employees. This chapter provides some key findings of some research done by the Shaw Trust on these issues. From the management side, in the survey, about 63% of employers thought that their organization's policy on mental health was effective in helping their staff to stay in work.
