ABSTRACT

Sometimes the crises that happen to one can be seen in retrospect to be the exact and perfect "nudge" that managed to get them out of that stuck position and forced them to change their life. Sometimes they need to take a wider or a different perspective. Such a perspective might include the possibility that some wounds just do not heal, and that this perspective is actually important. A family systems perspective would say that they are usually playing out some role within their family of origin and that whatever happens to them is seen in a particular light relating to this role. People who have been in prison, or in war, had illnesses or accidents, or near-death type of experiences, or who have been in other traumatic or horrific situations, or some extended family crises, describe these events as "life-changing". Their lives have changed, often quite radically.
