ABSTRACT

The psychological journey helps the people to achieve some relative degree of mental health and some relative degree of psychic maturity and equilibrium. In order to describe the psychological journey of discovery and growth, the author uses the psychoanalytic concepts of unity or fusion between mother and baby, illusion–disillusionment, transformational object, and unconscious belief. He also discusses the points of the psychoanalysts about this journey. Alonso Cueto's novel, Grandes Miradas, describes very well this developmental journey. Some people can manage this journey better than others, and some people cannot do it at all, perhaps because, like Lady Macbeth or some of the patients described, they collapse in the process of disillusionment due to the vast waves of unbearable guilt and depression they experience in the attempt to separate from the object.
