ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors prioritize their work in order to maximize preventative care and promote health and general well being for the whole family. However the models of prevention and the framework for health visiting continue to follow a medical or treatment model. The health visiting service in England is continually undergoing organizational change. Resources for the health visiting service have been reduced in many areas, necessitating the formation of multi-skilled teams including general nurses, nursery nurses, and health care assistants. The author utilizes the psychodynamic theories of John Bowlby and W. Bion in addition to Peter Fonagy's work as a framework of thinking based on observational skills and reflection, integrated with a person-centred style to establish a containing relationship. The formation of emotional and imaginative thought is integral to Bion's model of containment. Fonagy found a strong association between resilience and security.
