ABSTRACT

Reflecting upon the influence that Tom Andersen has had on how the author thinks about her life and work and how it has transformed or shifted her practice is a privilege. Being a white South African, she frequently experience discomfort in her work as a psychologist. She has no doubt that if she had lived and worked in another context, these feelings of discomfort may have been similar. The author's practice is in South Africa, and it includes the training of psychologists within a university setting; engaging in community partnerships including the co-development of a peer counselling programme in a rural area of southern Africa; being a consultant and trainer in other diverse community settings; and being a practicing therapist. In this chapter the author addresses one of the above contexts, the Maluti Peer Counselling Project. This project, supported by Tom Andersen, has been the most definitive experience of the author's working life.
