ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book provides a six-point guide to establishing a systemic service in a community team for people with intellectual disabilities. It presents situations where a decision was made to, for example, meet with the person with intellectual disabilities on his or her own for a few sessions. The book describes an example where sessions switched to the family home when the father in the family became housebound due to illness. It demonstrates how teaming up across different specialities can create an innovative lifespan service. The book also provides a number of examples where the person with intellectual disabilities brings a reference to a television programme or a metaphor to the session. It also describes how a systemic approach may influence the discussion of referrals in a multidisciplinary setting.
