ABSTRACT

This chapter describes both the consultant’s task as well as the skills and procedures which can be used in order to carry out this task. The process of internal consultation is inextricably linked to the task of the consultant. Formulating an idea about what provoked the request for consultation and some ideas about the problems help to prepare the consultation before starting the session. Hypotheses and questions are used to guide the consultant, and in turn to assist the consultant to solve his problem. The interview process is made easier if the consultant tries to establish links between ideas or statements, behaviour, relationships and beliefs. In people consultation work people identify and talk about ‘dreaded issues’, or what people fear the most about their having a problem. The consulting team will usually meet to discuss their ideas about the consultation session immediately after the session has ended.
