ABSTRACT

The circles indicate the three ego states by which every complex of thought, feeling, and action of an individual can be categorised. The excessively spontaneous Natural Child will go on record as egocentric—as lacking consideration for others. The Parent ego state can be described as the stored collection of thoughts, feelings, and behaviour that the child has taken over from caregivers and other educators. The egogram, in the way J. Dusay developed it, makes no distinction between the positive and the negative aspects of each ego state. The Adult ego state is the function that is mainly located in the cerebral cortex, especially the medial-orbital prefrontal cortex, where working memory and the integration between memory and emotional valuation are located and from where one's mood is regulated. The theory of ego states is also used within the field of management and organisational development, to analyse the organisation as a whole.
