ABSTRACT

Social dreaming questions the notion that dreams are personal possessions, which they undoubtedly are in a therapeutic situation. It can be used as a tool of research and consultancy—that is, action research. The experience of a social dreaming matrix places participants in the domain of searching for knowledge and insight as it makes use of scientific method: that is, working hypotheses. One hypothesis that emerged quickly in the social dreaming matrix was that transference issues were focused not on the hosts, but on the dreams. It was found that if the transference issues were addressed directly in the matrix, the dream was robbed of the opportunity to explore these issues. The dream matrix is a transitional object. The dreams are transformed from images into thinking in everyday, logical thoughts that are newly formed and so creative for the dream-participant.
