ABSTRACT

A vital distinction and an important good is the ability of managers and leaders to differentiate between firmness and punitiveness. Being punitive would involve certain actions by the manager such as fining the player concerned as a means of coercion. Quite apart from the unfairness of such action, punishment will not result in future compliance, it simply means that the player concerned learns to pay a fine. The personality of the manager or leader may have much to do with the way they carry out their role. The 'good enough manager' or leader will avoid punishing other team members and will make every effort to have their criticisms of other team members overbalanced by praising them whenever this is appropriate: deserved praise feels so much better to both of them. Praise is effective because it is a statement of our strong positive emotions, of our joy and pleasure.
