ABSTRACT

On 26 December 1925, the day after Karl Abraham died, Jones travelled to the continent by boat. There was such a thick fog that the ship had to drop anchor and he missed his train. He finally arrived in Berlin at ten in the evening and was met by Ernst Freud, Hanns Sachs, and Johan van Ophuijsen. In the Berlin Psychoanalytic Society, the reaction to Abraham's death was extreme. Everyone started arguing and they blamed each other, right from the evening of Abraham's funeral. Hedwig had been a dignified presence at the funeral, but afterwards she was seized by despair. Abraham's death was a huge blow to Freud, not only because he was extremely fond of Abraham but because he had placed all his hopes for the future in him. The committee, which had been brought back to life after all the difficulties with Rank, became less and less active after Abraham's death.
