ABSTRACT

Given the enormity of the task of bringing about significant weight loss in overweight and chronically overweight women, I felt that even if significant weight loss were not achieved, these women would gain from therapy. Beginning in 1990, several groups of investigators have studied the efficacy of improving body image without weight loss in overweight persons. In one of the first such studies, significant improvements in body image, as well as improvements in self-esteem and depression, were achieved following a programme designed to promote weight acceptance and decrease overeating.
