ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book investigates the proposition that literary resources may complement and enrich therapeutic approaches and augment the available range of personal skills and therapeutic techniques. It examines a view of therapists' development and the nature of the therapeutic relationship, through the medium of literary texts and practices like reading and writing. Therapists may set out with high hopes of their ability to help. Readers of the book will be in a position to recognise many forward destinations for themselves and will be emboldened to use the juxtaposition of literature and therapy in creative ways which add to their practice. Endings in therapy can be tough to achieve and painful to live through. At the same time they can be joyful and affirming affairs and/or sometimes a relief for all concerned.
