ABSTRACT
Research on psychiatric problems of immigrants in European countries, widespread though such research may be, does not take the complexity of the problems sufficiently into account and does not reflect upon the complexity that should characterize the instruments of research that are used. The therapeutic model for working with immigrants that has been written about, discussed, and debated most in recent years is undoubtedly the one being tested in Paris under the direction of Tobie Nathan. The translator or the cultural mediator can explain to us how problems that these patients are bringing into the session are faced within the culture from which they come. The translator not only explains it, but also discusses it with the patient and with people. Nathan's insistence on using the term "fabrication" is tied to another theoretical point that is fundamental for understanding his point of view.
