ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author presents the case study of Carolyn and Switch. Carolyn had always been very industrious, high-achieving and competent, excelling at everything she did. She was very level-headed, very much in control of herself, and very unfamiliar with emotional outbursts. Switch was funny, courageous, introverted, daring, and shy. Through Switch's ability to connect to the author and her therapists, those tenuous, threadbare linkages with Carolyn's multiple selves began to solidify and strengthen. Carolyn's key message in all her writing and speaking is always hope. In April 2005 she suddenly had a breakdown. She had a difficult night, waking frequently with nightmares. She became highly agitated, distressed, inconsolable. Her littleness was both confusing and convincing. She continues to have dissociative identity disorder, but her parts are more collaborative. Somatic symptoms continue to plague her. If there is one thing that has characterised Carolyn's recovery to date, it has been her determination to succeed.
