ABSTRACT

Before reading any of the collective expert-assessment reports issued by the French National Institute for Healthcare and Medical Research, it should be noted that the institution enlists all kinds of experts. In this chapter, the author focuses on four modalities. The first modality is the affirmation which holds that it is now possible not only to measure effectiveness on the symptom by means of questionnaires and the ubiquitous tick-box, but also the functioning of the person across a whole variety of "functions". The second modality of legitimisation concerns the difficulty in accounting for the context of clinical effectiveness, which now purportedly lies within the scope of the quantitative studies. The third modality is to produce measurement that shows that what is at issue is indeed the psychodynamic process. The fourth modality is to see psychotherapy finally taking up its legitimate place among the other therapies.
