ABSTRACT

A belief is an attitude about or toward a thing or the concept of the thing, whereas a value is the feeling invested in a thing or aroused by it. The attitude in belief can be implicit and unconscious, or it can be conscious and explicit. A conscious belief that is judged to be true is close to the extra-personal limit of mind in the need for objective data and consensus, which are extrinsic events that are brought to bear on what is otherwise an inclination or bias. The content of a belief can be a category or concept that becomes a belief when it is accompanied by a disposition to believe it. Religious belief captures the tension between positive and negative ideals in the conflict of good and evil, or god and the devil. The commitment to an object or activity is based on the value of the object or activity and the belief that it is valuable.
