ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author suggests that in falling in love the analysts can be transported once again, but this time in full maturity, to this realm. In one of the most well-known love songs, one that has endured for over half a century, “Somewhere” from the musical West Side Story, a girl sings of a place where lovers can be at peace together. Love has been able to redeem something in the outer world in the inner. The author argues that love itself has the potential to be a creative force that accomplishes this synthesis. Adult intimate love, often, initiated by passionate love, is one of the best arenas in which to learn how this integration can be achieved. A holistic account of passionate love must also take into account the integrity of the individual as a whole. Falling in love may help us come to the realization that, both internally and externally, “no man is an island entire of itself”.
