ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the case study of Elisabeth. The therapist experienced the mother as very friendly and making great efforts towards keeping things harmonious. The therapist surmised that Elisabeth, as a result of her early experiences of loss, had entered a kind of narcissistic withdrawal. Little by little, the animals took possession of the contents of the doll's house, to build up their own kingdom. The animals raided the house until in the end the human figures were left with nothing. The therapist saw a link to Elisabeth's own birth, which had been overshadowed by the loss of her parents' first daughter, her sister Elisa. Elisabeth was concerned with the topic of her own self and of identity. This was associated with another topic, that of dealing with aggressive impulses. During the day, Elisabeth gave the impression of being cut off from the world, lifeless and unreachable like the "dead child in heaven", as if Elisabeth were identifying with her dead sister, Elisa.
