ABSTRACT

The therapist needs to keep the couple’s life cycle in mind, because what happens at one stage of the life cycle can be quite different at another stage, and the therapeutic techniques used need to take this into account. Marital therapy has developed from a broad and unsophisticated beginning and that it has been influenced by different types of theoretical and technical models. A general view is that one would normally expect some arguments, disagreements, or conflicts and moderate stress as part of any functional marital relationship. A couple’s marital problems can be similar to those of other couples: there are general issues, but at the same time there are particular aspects to each couple. The therapist should connect with his or her own style and find a way to communicate with both partners so that the therapeutic intervention can be understood and used.
