ABSTRACT

Homosexuality is no longer thought of as a perversion or an illness, as used to be the case; it is a form of love in its own right, a particular way of loving and of feeling loved. Homosexuals seek help because they suffer from a disorder, and a very distressing one at that: loneliness. Psychoanalysis considers homosexuality to be a variant of sexual identity brought about by arrested development of the libido, which in turn is caused by an excess of tenderness and desire in the mother that ends up by submerging her son. The other type of female homosexuality, quite different from the first, could be described as more feminine in nature. Such a woman has had heterosexual experiences, she is more often than not married, and may even have children, but she falls madly in love with another woman, strong and gentle at the same time—a woman who possesses both masculine attributes and maternal qualities.
