ABSTRACT

The term ‘struggle’ is very much a part of the vocabulary of British Caribbean people. Although there are many social, political, and personal definitions of ‘struggle’, for the most part it is understood as referring to something which occurs between the individual and his or her outside world. This chapter presents a case study of a person "E" who came for psychotherapy at the suggestion of a friend. E’s parents came from different social backgrounds from within the same Caribbean country. E's mother returned to work after the birth, but—although she was never hospitalized—was considered sufficiently unwell to have been referred to a psychiatrist. E’s foster family—a white family, with many children—seem to have provided her with a loving environment. The turning point for E might also be described in terms of a turning away from ‘lies’ towards ‘truth’.
