ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses motherhood in the twenty-first century by considering the ramifications of creating life in a non-conventional way. It focuses on vertiginous progress of bio-technology which is an expression of present-day culture. The chapter also focuses on the irruption of various bodies and the sheer power of their realness, together with their potentially disturbing or upsetting effects on the psyche. The psychic effects of these technologies highlight the contrast between idealized conceptions of motherhood and the terrifying myths relating to fantasies of neogenesis associated with the social imaginary. The chapter expresses the concept of multicentric maternity as a notion that corresponds to current commonly-held beliefs and statements on the subject of neogenesis and technological procreation. These narratives express representations of femininity, maternity, reproduction, and female sexuality. They represent areas of intersection between fictional fantasies taken from literature and the cinema, cybernetics, and individual fantasies concerning procreation.
