ABSTRACT

Visiting units that practise multiple family therapy may help to overcome natural fears that working simultaneously with more than one family would be extremely difficult if not impossible. Ironically, quite the reverse is the case. Here then are some verbatim quotes of what families have said after participating in multiple family group therapy: “Changes have happened by hard work, openness, and the support of others. It was great to know others with similar problems". It is the families and their individual members who will have the last word(s). Multi-family work has been evaluated with schizophrenic and anorectic patients as well as with multi-problem families and families containing a chronically ill person. The developing Marlborough model of working intensively with whole groups of families in diverse contexts has, in turn, inspired multiple teams in different countries, creating contexts for change.
