ABSTRACT

Every piece of reality stands in relation to some other piece of reality. The only way to think of reality as relationless is to think of the whole of reality, the universe in its entirety, with nothing outside it. As with all realities, the self is inherently relational. It is always in relation to other selves in the human community. This chapter discusses that the core of narcissism is a hatred of the relational, a hatred of something that is inherent in our being. The concept of conscious and unconscious is a division that is based on what the individual is aware of in himself, and capable of being aware of, as opposed to those parts of himself of which he is not aware and those parts of which he does not want to be aware.
