ABSTRACT

A severely narcissistic parent programmed to exploit a child for the gratification of his or her own personal needs and to see it through is referred to here as an unconscious assassin. The way in which the unconscious assassin hates the narcissistically charged children is thus readily observed. It has been shown that the narcissistic mother overpowers the child, forcing it to meet her personal needs. Her control is absolute and non-negotiable. The targeted child is the one receiving the greatest emotional investment from his mother. Development can be derailed at any or all sub-phases given maternal deficits or stressful circumstances. In order to explain the origin of personality disorders seen in adults, Mahler and her team paid particular attention to disruptions at the sub-phases of practicing and rapprochement. The oedipal level always involves others as discrete people in the child’s world.
