ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors share their experience of working with families affected by brain injuries, with particular focus on the ways in which they have utilised narrative therapy techniques, in the form of narrative therapeutic scrapbooks, to support child relatives. They do this from a number of positions: that of a consultant clinical neuropsychologist specialised in leading and developing services for families affected by brain injury; and as a recently qualified clinical psychologist with a strong interest in working systemically with families affected by brain injury. When a parent or close family member sustains a brain injury, children, like their adult counterparts, are abruptly faced with having to manage a whole range of issues, concerns, and challenges. Creating narrative scrapbooks provides a means of applying narrative therapy techniques and draws on the creative skill and family expertise of the child, integrating this with what is known about the familial brain injury and subsequent treatment.
