ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a pragmatic approach to the challenge of gathering outcome evidence, while balancing applying narrative approaches within the predominantly scientific backdrop of brain injury services. The consequence takes a pragmatic approach to the issue of gathering outcome evidence which values both narrative and scientific frameworks. Outcome measurement comes in and out of their consciousness as therapists, depending on a whole range of factors, such as the political and economic climate, professional interest, and dominant discourses in academia, service provision, and commissioning. Neuropsychology has always held a strong link between research and practice, which is perhaps one of the reasons why the profession is particularly comfortable with evidencing outcome. The chapter provides summary examples of how to gather multiple sources of data as outcome evidence and discusses that outcome measures consistent with narrative approaches can yield rich, generalisable, and valid practice research.
