ABSTRACT

John Rickman believed that a knowledge of psychoanalysis for those who were not afraid to be interested in it could be of real help to people. Rickman was intensely concerned with the "oral tradition", as he called it, and was aware of the subliminal meanings that were often imperceptible when translated into the printed word. His experience of broadcasting helped him to consider other factors that could impact the awareness of his audience, such as silence, the tone of voice he used, and the timing of phrases. Rickman was well built and athletic in appearance, and he was particularly pleased when he won a Cambridge rowing "Blue". Rickman read medicine but had an interest in law. Rickman described his experiences as a country doctor in this area in a number of publications, which were collected in "Russian Camera Obscura" in The People of Great Russia.
