ABSTRACT

In Gestalt psychotherapy, the goal is indeed to analyse the structure of experience and to energise the relations between Figure and Ground. The Gestalt psychotherapist must become a master of transitions in a multi-dimensional therapeutic universe, guiding the client in his or her explorations of the different existential Fields, and in particular within the therapeutic relationship itself. Connections are brought to conscious attention by a process of hermeneutic dialogue between therapist and client. The goal of the therapeutic relationship is the detection of the object relational dead-ends, the recognition of their experiential dynamic, their dissolution, and restoration of a harmoniously functioning Self. In order to arrive at a complete therapeutic system in Mahrer's sense of the term, one needs to add a theory of psychotherapy that would be consistent with the theory of human nature. A theory of psychotherapy must indicate the material considered to be pertinent, valuable, or significant at the therapeutic level.
