ABSTRACT

Beginning with a new supervisee has many parallels with starting with a new patient. While the subject of supervision and the role of the supervisor have been written about within psychoanalytic literature the issues addressed most frequently refer to the supervisory relationship between a training analyst and a trainee. The supervisor also needs to consider the way in which they will work so that they can tell the potential supervisee. In a supervisory relationship both have responsibilities, and the contract needs to include a clear statement of these as well as business arrangements. There are counselling trainings that rely solely upon group supervision. This will often take place within the course itself with a person appointed purely as a supervisor. This is distinct from trainings that require individual supervision but also have clinical discussion groups within the course. Other members of supervisor staff team may carry out the initial interview, and selection is made after consultation.
