ABSTRACT

This chapter argues with a brief description of clinical governance and the place of clinical audit. It describes the context in which our supervision occurs—the development of supervision of supervisors—and presents feedback from various positions in the supervisory system. Supervision is a multi-layered process involving multiple systems and subsystems. Clinical supervision offers many stimulating opportunities and magical moments related to families' progress and trainees' development. The seeds of the idea of annual live supervision of supervisors that we have established at the Prudence Skynner Family Therapy Clinic arose out of a staff meeting in 1993. The observing supervisor needs to remain responsible "for the supervision of supervision", while the supervisor of the team remains clinically responsible for the successful outcome of work with the family. The linchpin of the proposal is clinical governance, which directs professionals to develop ways of auditing clinical practice.
