ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on more closely at the links between phantasies and feelings. It shows that how phantasies are triggered by events and sensations arising from the internal world and from the external world, and how they then mediate between the raw data and the feelings which are aroused. The chapter suggests that why some people seem to respond to situations with apparently inappropriate emotions or exaggerated ones: too much or too little feeling; despair or euphoria which goes beyond the reasonable; guilt where it might expect anger; or anger where we might expect an apology. It discusses that how some feelings can seem intolerable. The chapter looks at some of the possible effects of attempts people make to avoid them. Once the covering feelings have been worked through in some way, the buried love may re-emerge, albeit in a different, perhaps more realistic form.
