ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the key issues clinicians should consider when facing the issues surrounding returning to driving after brain injury and some suggestions about how to take their own practice forward. Driving is considered by most adults to be an "essential" activity of daily living and a route to increased freedom and social standing within society for young people. The Specialist Driving Assessment Centres referred to are a regional collection of centres run under the auspices of the Forum organisation. Given the highly emotive nature of returning to driving after acquired brain injury (ABI), advising on driving can place great strain on therapeutic and clinical relationships. Returning to driving after an ABI is a highly charged and fraught issue. In Western culture, driving is hard-wired into the psyche of most of us as a right and a fundamental component of accessing and participating in society.
