ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a community based vocational (VR) rehabilitation service for adults with an acquired brain injury (ABI). VR is one approach that can facilitate inclusion and participation of disabled people in society, regardless of their disability. VR can take an active lead role in advocating the rights of disabled people by removing the physical and attitudinal barriers, and by promoting their abilities and the capacity they can offer in society. Assessment is a key component of VR, as well as being a continuation of the information gathering process. Reintegration into previous lifestyle for the individual is an important goal of their rehabilitation and an indication of their recovery following their ABI. A client with an ABI experiences a transition from their pre-injury "old self" to an emerging, different person who is a combination of their "old and new self".
