ABSTRACT

This chapter describes some aspects of the development of our tutor–student relationship on a Masters in Therapeutic Counselling course. It presents a written dialogue that took place between us and was focused on Barbara's experience of being John's research supervisee within a university. The dialogue took place at a point in the supervisory relationship when Barbara's work had begun to flounder and John's supervisory input had become counterproductive. The chapter deals with the Gentle Warrior's initial letter, the Fisherman's response and the Gentle Warrior's response to the response. The fisherman is very open with very expressive non-verbal reactions. The Fisherman appeared dubious in regard to the time restraints, stressing yet again the importance of leaving time for reflective thinking. The dominant discourse provides the background to our dialogue. It is the knowledge system that dominates Western civilization and, as a result of this, contemporary academia.
